THE BACKSTORY

Across the nation, HBCU baseball programs are on the chopping block (and there weren’t many to begin with in the first place). Out of the 299 NCAA Division 1 baseball teams, only 17 belong to historically black colleges and universities as of 2022.
Durham is no exception to this trend.

On the same field that Crash Davis drove home runs in the 1988 movie classic Bull Durham,
the Eagles of North Carolina Central University faced their final days last spring.
N.C. Central is the fifth American HBCU baseball team eliminated in the
past four years.
